What are we doing at practice?

Friday, November 8th from 6:15pm to 7:15pm
Bridgetown Arena

Practice Plan

Skating Skill Development
10 minutes

Get comfortable with practising different skills you'd typically use during a regular hockey shift, like sharp and smooth changes in direction, tight and wide turns, pivoting, and skating forward. We’re only going to do Hard Direction Change (Skill 1 of 5 show at the 0:27 min in video) and Slide Out to Shuffle (Skill 4 of 5 show at the 2:00min mark on video) today.

Review the videos and let me know if you want to do a demo for the team!

Mirror Drill
1 min
We’re going to have a little fun with the mirror drill! Grab a partner when I call mirror drill and you are going to try to keep up with the leader for 30 seconds and then switch leaders and try again for 30 seconds.

Snap Shot Development
5 minutes to 10 minutes

Wow! The feedback is in - the team wants more shooting drills!

Watch the Snap Shot Development Video prior to practice to remind yourself of what great form will look like when taking a snap shot and we’ll spend five minutes working on our snap shots before transitioning to the next drill where you will be able to apply what you learned.

Defensive Zone Faceoffs and Attacking the Point

10 min

There was a special request from a player that was left in the Practice Review - they want to practice face offs!

We’ll be lining up in the defensive zone and dropping the puck to practice winning face offs and attacking the point.

Watch Team Canada break out take a faceoff in the defensive zone (minute 12:24) to see how the team moves in the defensive zone once the puck drops.

What does Team Canada do?
The wingers head straight to attack the point!
The centre follows the puck low into the corner and battles with opponent (and works the puck up and carefully watches to make sure the puck does not return to the zone before leaving)
And the defence control the front of the net and shoulder check to make sure no one is behind them.

Cut and Drop Warm Up Drill
10 minutes

You all did an absolutely amazing job of crashing the net in the game on Tuesday!

The Cut & Drop Warm Up helps players practice zone entries and getting on top of the puck in the offensive zone.

Watch Team Canada crash the net on a zone entry! Even though they don’t get a scoring opportunity, they are all in the zone and ready for a rebound. They then back check to Team USA and take away their 3 on 2.

  • SETUP

All players are split up into 4 lines. Two lines in the center ice circle and two lines along opposite blue lines.

On the whistle, the first player in the center ice lines takes off and works on crossing over to get up ice.

At the same time, the first player in the lines at the blue lines explode up ice.

The player with the puck at center ice gives a short quick pass to the player exploding up ice.

The player with the puck along the boards gets to the middle of the ice and drops a puck just inside the blueline to their teammate that switched with them that is now along the boards.

The player with the puck now works to gain middle ice inside of the zone to take a shot, all while the player without the puck drives to the front of the net for a screen, deflection or tip.

After a shot is taken, a coach places a puck in the corner.

One of the forwards retrieves the puck and quickly finds their teammate, who is supporting them around the face-off dot, for a quick shot on net.

    COACHING POINTS

Puck carrier works to get middle ice.

Player without the puck explodes up ice to push the pace.

Players should keep their sticks on the ice to let their teammate know where they would like their pass to be.

Angling Through the Circles
10 minutes

2 lines of players at tops of the circle. Drill starts with 1 player (X) going to retrieve a puck in the corner. The first O player follows X and gets right next to them so they are now skating up the wall. X (who has puck) now steps into and hits the O player. O is the decoy and allows X to step in and hit them. After the check X turns toward the wall and attacks the net. O then continues and picks up a puck in the opposite corner. As O is going to retrieve their puck a new X player comes in and follows as to be there decoy. Drill is continuous.
